||| What's in This Issue |||
||| Hello From Roy, Jr. |||
Hello family,
I have sent this newsletter out to inform you of what is going on with
Johnstons.Org. Time permitting, I'll regularly send out newsletters
to keep you up-to-date with what's happening on our web site. I used
the bulk e-mail function of the FamilyNet database to send this
newsletter out. This function is available to everybody and can be
accessed from the family database section of FamilyNet.

Since this is the first issue, I have started out with some background
information on Johnstons.Org: how it came about, what's its purpose,
where it is going, etc.
Throughout the newsletter, I ask for volunteers to help expand
Johnstons.Org into something we can be proud of. If you would
like to help, read on.
ABOVE ALL! Visit Johnstons.Org and check out the changes.

||| How Johnstons.Org Came About |||
In January 1997 I applied to the InterNic organization for the use
of the domain name johnstons.org. The application was approved
on February 4, 1997 and I paid $100 for two year use of the name
johnstons.org. The web site http://www.johnstons.org/ went
online February 21, 1997.
I registered johnstons.org with the idea that it would be good to
have a domain name for the exclusive use of our family. I did not,
however, have an exact idea of what purpose the domain name or
web site would serve. Until October, 1997, only a splash page
served as the Johnston web site.
In October, 1997, I developed the system that would become FamilyNet,
the password protected, family-only section of Johnstons.Org.
Some of the services included with the launch of FamilyNet were
a Web-based chat room and a news bulletin board updatable by anyone
registered to FamilyNet. A family contact database with bulk e-mailer
was soon added. At this time I also made efforts of letting family
members know of the existence of Johnstons.Org. In late October,
I registered Johnstons.Org with a number of search engines in an
effort to make Johnstons.Org easier to find.
Johnstons.Org has also become the host of three other web sites:
Mine: http://www.johnstons.org/roy/
Madeline Conrad's: http://www.johnstons.org/misspinkertons/
Mary Ellen Reed: http://www.johnstons.org/ahome4u/
||| Where Johnstons.Org Is Going |||
Right now, the current project for Johnstons.Org is populating
the FamilyNet database. See below for information about the
FamilyNet database. Also, Johnstons.Org is available for web
site hosting. If you would like to start your own personal
web page, I can set up web space for you. Just e-mail me.
There has also been some other interesting
suggestions.
Unfortunately, as great as these ideas are, they are tabled for
the time being. Since the launch of Johnstons.Org, I have been
the only one to administer and provide content for Johnstons.Org
(excluding the family photo provided by Vera Keefe). Implementing
the above suggestions would require materials, knowledge and time
that I do not have. I NEED YOUR HELP.
The basic problem is content. I do not have access to genealogy
information or many family photos. If someone can put the
information together, I can put it on the web site.
||| About the FamilyNet Database |||
The big thing for Johnstons.Org is the FamilyNet database.
The database has three purposes:
- The FamilyNet database is a central repository for contact
information on family members. With a fully populated
database, a person can quickly find up-to-date contact
information on anyone in the family.
- The FamilyNet database can be used to bulk e-mail anyone
or everyone in the family database at one time.
- The FamilyNet database stores information needed for FamilyNet
security and login.
In addition, everyone registered to FamilyNet has the option of
having a picture with their contact information and profile.
If you would like your picture on FamilyNet, simply send
me one to scan in or e-mail me
a pre-scanned picture.
The FamilyNet database is fully operational. Unfortunately, at
the time I am writing this, there are only 9 people in the database.
I NEED YOUR HELP.
To make the FamilyNet database truly useful, we need to populate
it with as many family members as possible. I have been debating
what would be the best way to populate the database. So far, the
only way I can think of is word-of-mouth (or is that word-of-email?).
TELL 'EM ABOUT IT.
Let the family know that the FamilyNet database exists. If they
are on the Internet they can register On-line at:
http://www.johnstons.org/memapp/
If they are not on the Internet, we still need them in the database.
Have them send me their contact information. They can send
it to:
Roy Johnston, Jr.
922 Cedar Creek South
Marietta, GA 30068
Phone: 770.956.1160
The database can be accessed in FamilyNet:
http://www.johnstons.org/login.cfm
||| Stats |||
Currently, there are 9 family members with listings in the FamilyNet
database. Of those, 7 have internet access and access to FamilyNet.
These 7 family members have made 82 visits to FamilyNet since the
Launch of FamilyNet on October 16, 1997.
||| A Call for Volunteers |||
Johnstons.Org is for the family. But if it is going to be truly,
useful, it will need input from the family (not just me). Here
are some things I need help with:
If you can help me out, e-mail me.
Bye-Bye :-)
